Prospective trainees for the Addictions Counseling Training Institute’s CIT Program must be at least 18 years of age and must complete the following ENROLLMENT REQUIREMENTS in order to be accepted into the program:
- Submit a completed Application for Admission.
- Pass a Criminal Background Check.
- Pass a Panel interview by ACTI officials.
- Submit to an Assessment of Alcohol/Drug Status.
- Must be a college graduate or have at least 60 hours of college credit, 9 of which are in Sociology, Psychology, Family Studies, or a related Behavioral Science field.
- Must complete an essay entitled "Why I want to be a CIT/Certified Substance Abuse Counselor".
Once enrolled in the training program, a CIT will receive daily clinical supervision by a Licensed Addiction Counselor or Masters level clinician. CIT’s will attend weekly supervisory meetings with the Institute’s Registered Counselor Supervisor. Training will focus on the 12 Core Functions, and how they relate to the CIT’s training at the present training site. Additional topics such as ethics, medical aspects of addiction, other addictive disorders, confidentiality, mental health law, and more will be addressed. Course topics will be presented in a cyclical manner so that CIT’s may enter the training program at any time. CIT’s will complete a post course examination upon completion of each module, and before being allowed to continue on to the next course. CIT’s must pass an overall course examination and receive satisfactory reviews in all course areas before receiving a Certificate of Completion from the CIT program.
SPECIAL NOTE: CIT’s will not be assigned menial tasks unrelated to substance abuse counseling.

The Addictions Counseling Training Institute is an Approved Training Institution (T018) and an Approved Educational Provider (E082) through the Office of Addictive Disorders Regulatory Authority (ADRA).
