APPLICATION PROCESS FOR INTERNET APPLICATIONS

 

Only U.S. citizens and non-citizens authorized to work in the United States by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service are eligible for employment by the Lafayette Consolidated Government. The deadline may be found at the top of the front of the application. Applications will not be accepted after the posted deadline. Applications must also include an original signature. Residents who live in the Lafayette area must turn-in their applications at the Civil Service office. If you live outside the Lafayette area, a copy of the required information must accompany the application before it is accepted.

In order for an application to be accepted, the following items are required at the time the application is turned in.
 
  • Proof that the applicant is 18 years of age or older and has permission to work in the United States issued by the Department of State if not a citizen, and has submitted to the Civil Service Office the prescribed completed employment forms of the aforementioned, prior to the deadline for applications.
  • Proof of a social security number. If you do not have your SS card, an official document with number printed on it will be accepted. (Ex: W-2, pay stub, etc.)

    The following item may be turned in at any time before the test is given.

  • Proof of veteran status; DD214. You must show proof of having served 90 consecutive days of active duty and show proof that you were honorably discharged. Any one showing proof will be awarded five points to a passing grade.
  • Deadlines are strictly enforced, your application form with items 1 and 2 listed above must be submitted to the Civil Service Office before both date/time and maximum number of applications stated on the ad or announcement of the vacancy.

Equipment Operator IV$14.23-$17.79/hour/DOEPublic Works
Position is responsible for the SKILLED operation of a GRADALL, Dozer, Excavator, Backhoe, Tandem Dump Truck and other heavy equipment used in maintenance, repair, and construction of large complex drainage projects. Applicants must be able to independently operate the equipment. Work of this class is distinguished from that of Equipment Operator III by the type of equipment operated, the skill level required by the job assignment, and the frequency of operation of the assigned equipment. Graduation from high school and experience in the operation of heavy construction equipment similar to those types listed herein, including some experience in precision work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Applicants must have at least a valid Commercial Driver’s License or CDL permit to apply and test, but must obtain a Louisiana Class A CDL with airbrake, combination and/or Tanker endorsements prior to hire. Equipment Operator IV (Backhoe)$14.23-$17.79/hour/DOELUS
Position is primarily responsible for the SKILLED operation of a Backhoe. Depending on area of assignment, may also operate other heavy equipment, including a tandem dump truck or flusher Truck. Applicants must be able to independently operate the equipment. Work of this class is distinguished from that of Equipment Operator III by the type of equipment operated, the skill level required by the job assignment, and the frequency of operation of the assigned equipment. Graduation from high school and experience in the operation of heavy construction equipment similar to those types listed herein, including some experience in precision work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Possession of a Class A commercial driver’s license with airbrake, tanker and combination endorsements as issued by the State of Louisiana required. Applicants must have at least a valid Commercial Driver’s License or CDL permit to apply and test, but must obtain a Louisiana class A CDL with endorsements, prior to hire required.  Accepting the first 15 completed applications until Friday, December 20, 2013, at noon, or until filled.

Fleet Mechanic $15.89-$19.86/hour/DOEPublic Works
Performs major repairs on automobiles, trucks, tractors, heavy fleet equipment and related mechanical equipment.  Graduation from a standard high school and experience in automotive and hydraulic repair and maintenance work on gasoline and diesel engines; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Valid driver’s license required to apply. Accepting the first 40 completed applications, or until filled. Possession of the appropriate class commercial driver’s license as required by State of Louisiana, upon completion of six-month working test required. Lineman I $13.89-$17.36 /hour/DOE LUS
Responsible for assisting in installation, maintenance, and repair of overhead or underground electrical distribution lines and related components of a municipal electrical distribution system. High school, knowledge of basic electrical principles, and experience related to the maintenance and installation of electrical distribution equipment. Position is subject to 24-hour call and work is sometimes hazardous. Apprenticeship may be required. Valid driver’s license required to apply. This is professional data processing work involved with defining problems in computer applications, and developing and testing possible solutions. Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field and experience in computer programming and application design; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Equipment Operator III (Street Sweeper)$12.61-15.76/hour/DOEPublic Works
Work of this class involves the operation of a Street Sweeper (90%), Tandem Dump Truck (10%), Frontend Loader, and related equipment primarily used in the streets division. Must be able to operate the street sweeper. Completion of the eighth grade and experience in the operation of automotive and construction equipment similar to those described herein; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Possession of a Class A commercial driver’s license with airbrake and combination endorsements as issued by the State of Louisiana required. Group Insurance Specialist $11.03-13.78/hour/DOEFinance
This is responsible clerical work in assisting with insurance issues in accordance with Consolidated Government policy. Work responsibilities include reviewing, analyzing, and applying insurance plan information as well as compiling insurance data for various reports. Positions in this class are secretaries to section supervisors or division managers one level removed from Departmental Director.&nbsp; Graduation from high school supplemented by clerical coursework, and experience in clerical work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Experience with Word and Excel desired. Ability to type 45 correct words per minute. Civil Engineering Aide III (Survey Crew) $15.42-$19.28/hour/DOEPublic Works
Position is responsible for performing civil engineering and technical tasks, in field and office, including but not limited to, survey instrument operation, residential and commercial construction inspection, development review and related civil engineering tasks. Sign and Marking Specialist$11.03-$13.78/hour/DOEPW/T&T
Purpose of positions in this class is to facilitate safe, efficient movement of traffic through the proper installation and maintenance of traffic control signs and markings. Completion of high school supplemented by substantial experience with installation and maintenance of traffic signs and pavement markings. Positions in this class are assigned to an apprenticeship as defined by Civil Service Rule IV, Section 6. This requires the employee to complete International Municipal Signal Association certification at Level II within five (5) years for continued employment. Valid driver’s license required to apply. Electric Distribution Dispatcher$17.10-$21.38/hour/DOE LUS
This is a technical position responsible for monitoring the proper function of the city’s electric distribution, water and wastewater systems. Work involves map reading, interpretation of data, maintenance of written and digital records, and interaction with the public. High school supplemented by coursework related to electric distribution construction and operations and/or prior professional experience in the field of electric transmission, distribution, system control and data acquisition, or any equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred. Employee will be required to work rotating shifts, which includes nights and weekends. Apprenticeship may be required. Position is responsible for skilled independent work in installation, maintenance, and repair of overhead and underground power lines and related components of the city-parish electrical transmission and distribution system. Position is subject to 24-hour call and work is sometimes hazardous. Graduation from high school supplemented by courses in basic electricity, and experience as a Lineman II; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Must show proof of having passed the written portion of the CDL to apply. A pole climbing performance test will be conducted.
