Employment Openings



Only U.S. citizens and non-citizens authorized to work in the United States by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service are eligible for employment by the Lafayette Consolidated Government. The deadline may be found at the top of the front of the application. Applications will not be accepted after the posted deadline. Applications must also include an original signature. Residents who live in the Lafayette area must turn-in their applications at the Civil Service office. If you live outside the Lafayette area, a copy of the required information must accompany the application before it is accepted.

In order for an application to be accepted, the following items are required at the time the application is turned in.
  • Proof that the applicant is 18 years of age or older and has permission to work in the United States issued by the Department of State if not a citizen, and has submitted to the Civil Service Office the prescribed completed employment forms of the aforementioned, prior to the deadline for applications.
  • Proof of a social security number. If you do not have your SS card, an official document with number printed on it will be accepted. (Ex: W-2, pay stub, etc.)

    The following item may be turned in at any time before the test is given.

  • Proof of veteran status; DD214. You must show proof of having served 90 consecutive days of active duty and show proof that you were honorably discharged. Any one showing proof will be awarded five points to a passing grade.
  • Deadlines are strictly enforced, your application form with items 1 and 2 listed above must be submitted to the Civil Service Office before both date/time and maximum number of applications stated on the ad or announcement of the vacancy.

Lineman III$24.81-$31.02/hour/DOE LUS
Position is responsible for skilled independent work in installation, maintenance, and repair of overhead and underground power lines and related components of the city-parish electrical transmission and distribution system. Position is subject to 24-hour call and work is sometimes hazardous. Graduation from high school supplemented by courses in basic electricity, and experience as a Lineman II; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Must show proof of having passed the written portion of the CDL to apply. A pole climbing performance test will be conducted. Louisiana Class A CDL with Air Brake and Combination endorsements within 14-days of hire required. Accepting the first 15 completed applications until Friday, May 8, 2015, at noon, or until filled.

Programmer Analyst (Network Engineering)$23.83-$29.79/hour/DOE $4,130-$5,163/month/DOELafayette Utilities
Position is responsible for defining problems in computer applications and developing and testing possible solutions. Also responsible for identifying data elements, program logic, and equipment requirements for each step in the development of an application. Must have knowledge of inter-application communications methods such as API.s implemented via SOAP and JSON and application development tools such as .NET, ASP, NET, JavaScript, C#, and PHP. Knowledge of databases such as Microsoft SQL Server and MYSQL. Experience with Linux operating systems desirable. Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field and experience in computer programming and application design; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. FLEET MECHANIC $16.20-$20.26/hour/DOEPublic Works
Performs major repairs on automobiles, trucks, tractors, heavy fleet equipment and related mechanical equipment. Graduation from a standard high school and experience in automotive and hydraulic repair and maintenance work on gasoline and diesel engines; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Valid driver’s license required to apply. Possession of the appropriate class commercial driver’s license as required by State of Louisiana, upon completion of six-month working test required. ANIMAL CARETAKER$11.25 - $14.06/hour/DOECAO
Graduation from high school and considerable experience in the care and wellbeing of animals; or any combination of training and experience. Assists with vaccination and care giving of the animals. Position demands that applicants must not be afraid of animals and may require putting animals to sleep. Work involves some heavy lifting. Background checks may be required.  Valid driver’s license required to apply. Possession of a valid Louisiana driver’s license required. Positions in this class are assigned to an apprenticeship as defined by Civil Service Rule IV, Section 6. This requires the employee to complete initial and ongoing training requirements established by the Chief Administrative Office, Animal Control division, in accordance with Louisiana state law, euthanasia personnel shall receive Euthanasia Certification by the Humane Society of the United States Academy on Euthanasia or an equivalent program within one year of date of employment for continued employment.
