APPLICATION PROCESS FOR INTERNET APPLICATIONS

 

Only U.S. citizens and non-citizens authorized to work in the United States by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service are eligible for employment by the Lafayette Consolidated Government. The deadline may be found at the top of the front of the application. Applications will not be accepted after the posted deadline. Applications must also include an original signature. Residents who live in the Lafayette area must turn-in their applications at the Civil Service office. If you live outside the Lafayette area, a copy of the required information must accompany the application before it is accepted.

In order for an application to be accepted, the following items are required at the time the application is turned in.
 
  • Proof that the applicant is 18 years of age or older and has permission to work in the United States issued by the Department of State if not a citizen, and has submitted to the Civil Service Office the prescribed completed employment forms of the aforementioned, prior to the deadline for applications.
  • Proof of a social security number. If you do not have your SS card, an official document with number printed on it will be accepted. (Ex: W-2, pay stub, etc.)

    The following item may be turned in at any time before the test is given.

  • Proof of veteran status; DD214. You must show proof of having served 90 consecutive days of active duty and show proof that you were honorably discharged. Any one showing proof will be awarded five points to a passing grade.
  • Deadlines are strictly enforced, your application form with items 1 and 2 listed above must be submitted to the Civil Service Office before both date/time and maximum number of applications stated on the ad or announcement of the vacancy.

Equipment Operator IV$2,517-$3,146/month/DOEPublic Works
Position is responsible for the SKILLED operation of a GRADALL, Dozer, Excavator, Backhoe, Tandem Dump Truck and other heavy equipment used in maintenance, repair, and construction of large complex drainage projects. Applicants must be able to independently operate the equipment. Work of this class is distinguished from that of Equipment Operator III by the type of equipment operated, the skill level required by the job assignment, and the frequency of operation of the assigned equipment. Graduation from high school and experience in the operation of heavy construction equipment similar to those types listed herein, including experience in precision work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Apprenticeship may be required. Possession of a Class A commercial driver’s license with airbrake, combination and/or tanker endorsements as issued by the State of Louisiana. Applicants must have at least a valid Commercial Driver’s License or CDL permit to apply and test, but must obtain a Louisiana class A CDL with endorsements, prior to hire required.

EQUIPMENT OPERATOR II (Parks & Rec)$11.36-$14.21/Hour/DOEParks & Recreation
Position operates a tractor with a 15-foot bush hog and various small pieces of equipment, such as chain saws, pruners, and weed eaters to cut grass and perform municipal park maintenance. Ability to read and write; some experience in the operation of equipment similar to those described herein; or any equivalent combination of training and experience is desired. Responsible for the skilled operation of a Backhoe, and Tandem Dump Truck. Ability to read and write, and experience in the operation of trucks or equipment similar to those described herein; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Possession of a Class A commercial driver’s license with airbrake and combination endorsements as issued by the State of Louisiana. Applicants must have at least a valid Commercial Driver’s License or CDL permit to apply and test, but must obtain a Louisiana class A CDL with endorsements, prior to appointment required. CARPENTER I$14.52-$18.15/Hour/DOECommunity Development
This is skilled carpentry work in the construction, maintenance and repair of structures, equipment and articles of wood. This position covers all areas of carpentry, including, framing, finish work, millwork, cabinetry, etc. Graduation from a standard high school or equivalent, and some experience as a carpenter in the general repair or maintenance of buildings; or completion of a recognized apprenticeship which would indicate possession of the requirements necessary to satisfactorily perform this work. WATER METER TECHNICIAN $12.82-$16.02/Hour/DOELUS
This position performs mechanical tasks in the installation, cleaning, and testing of water meters. Some minor repairs may be performed. Work includes customer contact and is subject to periodic 24-hour call. Qualifications also include the possession of computer skills and a familiarity with the Lafayette area. Graduation from high school and some experience in the repair of small machines and mechanical devices or related; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Possession of Class II Water Distribution certification as administered by the State of Louisiana, within two years of appointment is desirable. Valid driver’s license required to apply. Valid Louisiana driver’s license prior to appointment required. Ability to maintain functioning telephone. Ability to arrive on site within 30 minutes of being notified for after-hour call-out. Positions in this class provide application support for LUSFiber’s billing software. Installs new releases of packaged software, troubleshoots any problems with software and resolves issues. Also trains users on new, or modifications to, software. Handles requests for information by generating custom reports and running queries. Tests, develops, and implements new business processes to ensure greater efficiency. Degree in Computer Science, Business or closely related field and considerable experience with billing applications; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. TRAFFIC SIGNAL TECHNICIAN I$18.17-$22.71/Hour/DOE Public Works
Position is responsible for skilled work involved in the installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signals, signal systems, and associated traffic equipment. Graduation from high school, completion of recognized vocational/technical school course work in electronics and electricity (AC/DC voltage) and experience in traffic signal installation, maintenance, and repair; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Pass International Municipal Signal Association course exam for Level I/Associate Traffic Signal Technician certification within one year, and for Level II/Traffic Signal Technician within two years of employment. Must have a valid driver’s license to apply. Apprenticeship may be required. Positions in this class are assigned to an apprenticeship as defined by Civil Service Rule IV, Section 6. This requires the employee to complete initial and ongoing training requirements as established by Traffic and Transportation within one (1) year for continued employment, including the obtainment of the appropriate class of Driver’s License as required by the State of Louisiana during the working test period required. PLANNER I (Planning)$18.17-$22.71/Hour/DOEDevelopment & Planning
Position is responsible for researching, analyzing, and reporting on various planning projects and programs as part of the Comprehensive Plan, PlanLafayette. Incumbents are also involved with formulating, modifying and administering current and/or long-range master plans. Essential functions include: the provision of staff support related to planning projects, completion of research projects, data compilation including survey (questionnaire) work and lands records research, field evaluations and assessments, demographic analysis, grants administration, public outreach, public meeting facilitation, preparation of maps, charts, and planning reports, and the performance of other duties as assigned. Strong data and GIS skills preferred. Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, or a closely related field; or any combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. LABOR FOREMAN III (LUS Wastewater Collection)$16.37-$20.46/Hour/DOELUS
Position is responsible for supervising a crew who repairs and installs pressurized and non-pressurized wastewater lines and manholes. Oversees the repair of driveways, sidewalks, and roadways as needed. Follows established safety procedures to maintain traffic control. Receives and tracks assigned work orders on laptop computer. Graduation from high school and considerable experience in the maintenance, repair, and minor construction of municipal wastewater facilities, including some lead worker experience at the level of Labor Foreman II; Class IV Wastewater Collection certification; or any equivalent combination of education and experience is desired. Position is responsible for enforcement of local and national codes and regulations governing pre-completion electrical installation. Work involves on-site inspections at each of several phases of construction of both commercial and residential structures. Position works with relative independence, and provides advisement and customer service to involved parties throughout the electrical inspection process. Graduation from a standard high school and experience in a wide variety of skilled residential and commercial construction; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, abilities, and skills. Valid driver’s license required to apply. Positions in this class are assigned to an apprenticeship as defined by Civil Service Rule IV, Section 6. This requires the employee to complete certification as a Residential and Commercial Building Codes Enforcement Officer as required by the State of Louisiana within one (1) year for continued employment. Current position requires the employee to complete the preceding certifications in the Electrical discipline. Applicants must obtain a valid Louisiana driver’s license prior to appointment required. JUVENILE DETENTION ATTENDANT I $9.89-$12.37/Hour/DOE JDH
Monitors detainees at the Juvenile Detention Home. High school graduation or equivalent and some experience working with and supervising juveniles; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Position may work 12-hour day or night shift. Background checks will be conducted. Current position open is in the male dorm, but females are encouraged to apply for possible future vacancies in the female dorm.
