APPLICATION PROCESS FOR INTERNET APPLICATIONS

 

Only U.S. citizens and non-citizens authorized to work in the United States by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service are eligible for employment by the Lafayette Consolidated Government. The deadline may be found at the top of the front of the application. Applications will not be accepted after the posted deadline. Applications must also include an original signature. Residents who live in the Lafayette area must turn-in their applications at the Civil Service office. If you live outside the Lafayette area, a copy of the required information must accompany the application before it is accepted.

In order for an application to be accepted, the following items are required at the time the application is turned in.
 
  • Proof that the applicant is 18 years of age or older and has permission to work in the United States issued by the Department of State if not a citizen, and has submitted to the Civil Service Office the prescribed completed employment forms of the aforementioned, prior to the deadline for applications.
  • Proof of a social security number. If you do not have your SS card, an official document with number printed on it will be accepted. (Ex: W-2, pay stub, etc.)

    The following item may be turned in at any time before the test is given.

  • Proof of veteran status; DD214. You must show proof of having served 90 consecutive days of active duty and show proof that you were honorably discharged. Any one showing proof will be awarded five points to a passing grade.
  • Deadlines are strictly enforced, your application form with items 1 and 2 listed above must be submitted to the Civil Service Office before both date/time and maximum number of applications stated on the ad or announcement of the vacancy.

Equipment Operator IV$13.48-$16.85/hour/DOEPublic Works
Position is responsible for the SKILLED operation of a GRADALL, Dozer, Excavator, Backhoe, Tandem Dump Truck and other heavy equipment used in maintenance, repair, and construction of large complex drainage projects. Applicants must be able to independently operate the equipment. Work of this class is distinguished from that of Equipment Operator III by the type of equipment operated, the skill level required by the job assignment, and the frequency of operation of the assigned equipment. Graduation from high school and experience in the operation of heavy construction equipment similar to those types listed herein, including some experience in precision work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Applicants must have at least a valid Commercial Driver’s License or CDL permit to apply and test, but must obtain a Louisiana Class A CDL with airbrake, combination and/or Tanker endorsements prior to hire. Equipment Operator IV (Backhoe)$13.96-$17.44/hour/DOELUS
Position is primarily responsible for the SKILLED operation of a Backhoe. Depending on area of assignment, may also operate other heavy equipment, including a tandem dump truck or flusher Truck. Applicants must be able to independently operate the equipment. Work of this class is distinguished from that of Equipment Operator III by the type of equipment operated, the skill level required by the job assignment, and the frequency of operation of the assigned equipment. Graduation from high school and experience in the operation of heavy construction equipment similar to those types listed herein, including some experience in precision work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Possession of a Class A commercial driver’s license with airbrake, tanker and combination endorsements as issued by the State of Louisiana required. Applicants must have at least a valid Commercial Driver’s License or CDL permit to apply and test, but must obtain a Louisiana class A CDL with endorsements, prior to hire required.  Accepting the first 15 completed applications until Friday, December 20, 2013, at noon, or until filled.

Equipment Operator IV (Motor Grader)$13.96-$17.44/hour/DOEPublic Works

Fleet Mechanic $15.58-$19.47/hour/DOEPublic Works
Performs major repairs on automobiles, trucks, tractors, heavy fleet equipment and related mechanical equipment.  Graduation from a standard high school and experience in automotive and hydraulic repair and maintenance work on gasoline and diesel engines; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Equipment Operator III$12.36-15.45/hour/DOEPublic Works
Responsible for the skilled operation of a Backhoe and Tandem Dump Truck. May also operate an asphalt dually. Ability to read and write, and experience in the operation of trucks or equipment similar to those described herein; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Possession of a Class A commercial driver’s license with airbrake and combination endorsements as issued by the State of Louisiana required. Applicants must have at least a valid Commercial Driver’s License or CDL permit  to apply and test, but must obtain a Louisiana class A CDL with endorsements, prior to hire required. Lineman I $13.61-$17.02 /hour/DOE $2,360-$2,950/month/DOELUS
Responsible for assisting in installation, maintenance, and repair of overhead or underground electrical distribution lines and related components of a municipal electrical distribution system. High school, knowledge of basic electrical principles, and experience related to the maintenance and installation of electrical distribution equipment. Position is subject to 24-hour call and work is sometimes hazardous. Apprenticeship may be required. Valid driver’s license required to apply. Traffic Signal Tech I$17.46-$21.83/hour/DOEPublic Works
Position is responsible for skilled work involved in the installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signals, signal systems, and associated traffic equipment. Graduation from high school, completion of recognized vocational/technical school course work in electronics or electricity (AC/DC voltage) and experience in traffic signal installation, maintenance, and repair; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Pass International Municipal Signal Association course exam for Level II/Associate Traffic Signal Technician certification within one year and for Level II/Traffic Signal Technician within two years of employment. Apprenticeship may be required. Must have a valid driver’s license to apply. Possession of a valid Louisiana Class D Driver’s License, upon completion of six month working test. Civil Engineering Aide II (Rodman) $13.43-$16.79/hour/DOE Public Works

Position is responsible for developing and implementing proper lighting of a variety of shows at a performing arts center. Planner I $17.46 - $21.83/hour/DOE PZD-Planning
Position is responsible for researching, analyzing and reporting on various planning projects and programs as part of the newly adopted comprehensive plan, PlanLafayette. Essential functions include: the provision of staff support related to planning projects; completion of research projects; the compilation of data and demographic analysis; and the performance of other duties as assigned. Strong data and GIS skills preferable. A Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, or a closely related field; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Planner II $19.56 - $24.45/hour/DOE PZD-Planning
This position is responsible for working on specific elements of the newly adopted PlanLafayette, the comprehensive plan, which includes capital improvements, land use, drainage, housing, neighborhood planning, etc. Under general supervision, the Planner II will work in a wide variety of professional planning projects including but not limited to: policy development, data collection and mapping, interpretation and presentation; cross departmental coordination; and monitoring/implementation. The comprehensive planning staff are responsible for long-range planning and strategic planning as it relates to urban redevelopment and the implementation of PlanLafayette. The ideal candidate will possess excellent verbal, written and organizational skills. Master’s Degree in Urban Planning or closely related field plus two years of work experience in planning desired. Position is responsible for the maintenance of the Zoning Ordinance, application and exercising independent judgment regarding interpretation of zoning laws, issuing Certificates of Occupancy, reviewing building permit applications and enforcement of zoning laws. Ability to read plats, maps, and site plans, perform mathematical calculations to determine required green space, parking spaces, etc., research and analyze zoning issues, prepare reports and correspondence, and make zoning presentations at public meetings. Bachelor’s degree in Planning or related field and/or some experience in urban planning or related work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Electric Distribution Dispatcher$16.77-$20.96/hour/DOE LUS
This is a technical position responsible for monitoring the proper function of the city’s electric distribution, water and wastewater systems. Work involves map reading, interpretation of data, maintenance of written and digital records, and interaction with the public. High school supplemented by coursework related to electric distribution construction and operations and/or prior professional experience in the field of electric transmission, distribution, system control and data acquisition, or any equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred. Employee will be required to work rotating shifts, which includes nights and weekends. Apprenticeship may be required. Position is responsible for development and implementation of new solid waste recycling projects as well as supervision of existing programs, with the objective of economically reducing the volume of municipal solid waste requiring disposal. Accountant I, II, III$17.14-$30.01/hour/DOEFinance
Positions in these classes performs work in various areas, depending on qualifications, requiring knowledge of the theory and practice of accounting, with emphasis on the recording, examining, and analysis of fiscal transactions; or ensures timely and quality accounting records with a higher level of responsibility than that of an Accountant I; or ensures timely and quality accounting records and financial statements with more independence and at a higher level of responsibility than that of an Accountant I or II. Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in  accounting required, and experience in government or utility accounting work, including experience preparing accounting and statistical reports; or considerable experience involved in the preparation or evaluation of accounting and statistical reports, including experience in utility accounting prescribed by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
