Lafayette City-Parish Council District Three![]() Brandon Shelvin, Council Member Brandon Shelvin is the youngest member of the Lafayette City-Parish Council, and is the youngest ever to be elected to the consolidated council. The son of the late Alton “Tony” Chaisson and Dory Armour, he was born and reared in the district he currently represents for the majority of his upbringing. As a child, he attended the Holy Family Catholic School, J.W. Faulk, St. Antoine Elementary and Lafayette Middle School. From Lafayette Middle, he went on to Delcambre High School to graduate at the top of his class with honors. Following graduation, he continued on to Louisiana State University (LSU) to pursue an education in Microbiology. He also completed the J.M. & A School of Finance and Insurance. As a community leader, Brandon is an active member of First United Full Gospel Assembly, and played an integral role in the building of the church's current multi-facet facility. He attributes his current role as a mentor in varied organizations to his early childhood exposure to the Boys and Girls Club in Lafayette. He has served on the Lafayette Consolidated Government Parks and Recreations Commission as the Chairman of Adult Programs/Centers Committee; Publicity Committee member and also a Neighborhood Relations Committee member. He also volunteers his time to the Board of Directors for the Lafayette Chapter of the NAACP as the youth and young adult chairman and liaison between Lafayette’s chapter and the UL-Lafayette chapter. He is an avid supporter of the Lafayette Association for Retarded Citizens (LARC), and he served on numerous advisory boards. Brandon is a member of the 100 Black Men of Greater Lafayette and is also proud to be the head coach of Brown Park Bulls Basketball Team. This year, he was nominated by his peers, and is currently serving as Leader of Community Development; Assistant to Police, Fire and Safety; Finance and Economy; Public Works and Traffic and Transportation. He attributes his youthful success to being mindful of where he comes from, and having a clear outlook on where he intends to go. He brings to any leadership position he serves, new ideas, needed change, a passion to serve and a heart for the people. His closing words are. "If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always got, but in order to get something you've never had, you'll have to do something you've never done," what he sums up to mean "There is nothing too hard for God." |
