Council Districts Map

Political boundaries are important to all. The included link is to a Parish wide Interactive Map, which allows an individual to input an Address and auto zoom to see his Council District Number and Council Member Bio and related demographics.

How To Use

Click on the LCG Council Districts link in the GIS MENU sidebar. An Interactive Map page is displayed. A Progression indicator floats atop the map area to show that the server is working by displaying a black banner labeled “Retrieving map”. Any time this banner is visible do not click on the map until the map image retrieval is finished (Time dependent upon connection speed and server load).

The initial Map display reveals the entire Parish with each Council District colorized and the District Number displayed within each District. The Legend displays the name of the Councilman from each district and is matched to the district number by the color scheme.

Notice on the left frame there is a set of tools on a toolbar. The currently selected tool is identified by a red outline box. Any time you click on the map area the function of the currently selected tool will be carried out. If you hover your mouse icon over each tool’s Icon a pop up label will tell you what the tool does.

This Interactive Map is designed for the user to type in an Address (must be a valid House number and street name) or two intersecting streets and click on the Locate button. The map will auto zoom to that Address area.

Once zoomed to an Address the Street Centerline labeled with the Street Name and the Council District Number will be displayed. Once again match the map’s color against the color in the legend to identify the Council member for that district.

Click anywhere on the Council District Map to hyperlink to an information window detailing a biography of the Council Member and the Demographics associated with that Council District. Please observe the Disclaimer associated with the Demographic data.

If you want further information or want details on any layer, which has been selected as the Active Layer, click the black “i” information Icon on the toolbar. Observe the Identify icon becomes surrounded by a red outline box (becomes the selected tool). Click on any feature on the Active Layer for information about that feature. If many features are selected you can view all of them by scrolling up or down in the bottom frame.

To change the Active Layer or to change the Layers being viewed, you toggle the Legend to a Layer List. To do so hover your mouse over the most upper left toolbar icon and see it display “Toggle between Legend and Layer list”. Click this Icon and observe the rightmost frame now displays a Layer list having Check boxes next to all available layers.

Click the Radio button to select any layer as the Active Layer. The Active Layer will be the layer, which will be used if the Identify, Find or Query tool is used.

Check the box (Click on the Checkbox) next to any and/or all layers you wish to display or uncheck any box associated with a layer you do not wish to display. Once the layers are Checked or Unchecked click the Refresh Map button for the changes to take effect. Allow the Progression bar to go away before clicking on the map. Once layers are selected you may Toggle back to the Legend list by clicking the previously mentioned Icon.

Note: The more layers you Check to display, the slower will be the update for the map image, therefore if you are on a slow connection you may want to limit your layer display to as few as possible to maximize your response time. While you may zoom out with additional layers Checked and turned on, be aware that your response time will also be much slower as data from each turned on layer has to be processed over a larger and larger area as you zoom out.

If you find your computer not responding fast enough or you’ve waited as long as you are willing, click on the Interactive Maps upper right “CLOSE” box to close the Map and place you back at the GIS MENU page. OR, once you have finished using the Interactive Map, you end your session by clicking the “CLOSE” box.

Do not use your browsers “BACK” page or arrow to get back to the GIS MENU. The interactive Map Server does not allow the normal action of these back functions and will only cause the map to un-draw and display unexpected results. Click the “CLOSE” box, or click the "Back" link (See Below) in the Left Tool bar Frame. Re-launch the Interactive Map from the GIS MENU page to begin again.
