In its first full year in operation, The Wetlands continued its impressive opening stride, hosting more than 20 tournaments through the year. Two of the more notable events included the LPGA Louisiana Pelican Classic, where 150 tour players competed for spots on the LPGA Tour; and one of the qualifying tournaments for the Nationwide Chitamacha Open. Local-themed events included a summer junior clinic (75 youth golfers attended), a Parent-Child Invitational, a Ladies Invitational and the Fall Four Ball, a men’s invitational.

2007 also saw The Wetlands become the 13th member (and the only course in the true Acadiana area) of the Audubon Golf Trail. This state-wide network of mid- to high-end public or daily-fee courses is promoted through state tourism websites and more.

For its first full year, the course roughly kept pace with its 2006 opening, with golfers enjoying just over 28,000 rounds. Revenue generated by The Wetlands amounted to $985,000.

Lafayette’s original municipal course enjoyed steady usage, though it’s 24,758 rounds was a 13% decrease from the prior year. Revenue also dropped slightly (6% after adjusting 2006 numbers), with the course bringing in $400,799. Some of these decreases may be attributable to a number of tournaments rotating to other courses and the proximity of the Wetlands (the parish’s third course which opened mid-2006), with many regular Hebert course players trying the new course as well.

Hebert Municipal also hosted many special events, including the Acadiana Golf Society’s Junior Golf Tournament (a.k.a. the Mickey Hebert Memorial) with over 100 participants, the Sheriff’s Junior Golf Summit with more than 200 golfers, and the City Championship (one round at each of the three public courses), with over 60 participants.

2007 saw over 39,000 rounds played (a four percent drop) at Les Vieux Chenes, though corresponding revenue rose by four percent, coming in at $616,354. Les Vieux Chenes’ staff was also busy with a number of course improvements, both minor and major. Some of the improvements include:

  • Yardage markers were raised and repainted in every fairway; yardages were also noted on cart paths.
  • Walkways (for golfers choosing to walk the course) were cut from all tees to fairways.
  • A full-service club repair area, including a loft and lie machine, is now available to all golfers.
  • Fifty percent of the old irrigation heads (from the previous irrigation unit) were elevated.
  • Course staff underwent training by the Louisiana Golf Association on the administration of the handicap computer system and its services; a new marshal and starter program was implemented.
