Law Enforcement Warns of Deadly Drug

Lafayette, LA – Lafayette Metro Narcotics in conjunction with the Lafayette Sheriff’s Office and the Lafayette Police Department are warning the public about a deadly drug that is believed to be responsible for several deaths in the Acadiana area.  The drug’s name is Fentanyl and is a potent, synthetic opioid analgesic with a rapid onset and short duration of actions. Fentanyl is being substituted and sold as Heroin on the streets.  The drug users are using Fentanyl in the same manner as they would Heroin, but Fentanyl is estimated to be 50 times more potent.  Since the beginning of 2016 law enforcement has seen at least 8 deaths within the City of Lafayette and 5 deaths outside of the city that they believe are attributed to the use of Fentanyl.  In most cases the deaths were investigated as overdoses, but toxicology would later confirm the use of Fentanyl.  The primary producers of Fentanyl are China and Mexico.  Local and state law enforcement officials are working together to identify and arrest suppliers and dealers responsible for putting the drug on the streets.

Anyone with information pertaining to the illegal use of Fentanyl is encouraged to call Local Law Enforcement or Crime Stoppers at 232-TIPS.
