Lafayette, (population of more than 120,000) is the 4th largest city in Louisiana. Lafayette is located on Interstates 10 and 49, 129 miles west of New Orleans and 229 miles east of Houston, Texas. The moderate climate in Lafayette allows year round outdoor activities. Because of tremendous fishing and hunting sites available statewide, Louisiana is called the "Sportsman's Paradise". Known as "The Heart of Acadiana", Lafayette has a rich French heritage blended with Spanish, American, Indian, and African influences. This progressive city represents a colorful combination of life styles.
Lafayette's unique cultural heritage offers the setting for South Louisiana Cajuns "descendants of the French Acadian" to put into practice their treasured expression "Laissez Les Bon Temps Roulez" ("Let the good times roll"), as well as its world famous haute cuisine (good eating), which is a subtle blending of herbs and spices, created within the State of Louisiana.
Lafayette is home of the University of Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns®. The University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Women's Softball Team has appeared in the College World Series 4 times in the 90's. The football team is a member of the Division 1 Sunbelt Conference. While offering an outstanding athletic program, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette offers a wide curriculum that has achieved excellence in many areas, including Criminal Justice. The University of Louisiana at Lafayette Graduate School offers 35 Master's Degrees and 7 Doctorate Degrees.
Lafayette has 5 major medical facilities (Lafayette General Medical Center, Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Medical Center of Southwest Louisiana, Women and Children's Hospital, and University Medical Center).
Today, the Lafayette Consolidated Government continues to move forward, as it supports the Lafayette Police Department's efforts to become a model law enforcement agency for the future. The Lafayette Police Department currently is utilizing the LA Crash program to work crashes and has a completely wireless and paperless reporting system.
The Lafayette Police Department has recently returned to the use of the traditional black and white police car. Approximately 1.6 million dollars was used in 2007 to purchase 47 new police cars sporting the new color and stripping scheme.
