Parish-Wide Millage Renewals Fail

Two existing millages to fund the operation and maintenance of the Parish Courthouse Complex and the Adult Detention Center (Parish Jail) failed to be renewed by voters in Lafayette Parish today, Saturday, April 29, 2017.

The two failed millage renewals cover operations as well as maintenance and capital improvements of the parish courthouse and jail. The millage for the jail also funds state-mandated costs of feeding, housing, medical care and transportation of prisoners. “We will have to collaborate with the Clerk of Court and Sheriff to figure out how to fund these critical functions. We have an incredibly tough task ahead of us," stated Lafayette Mayor-President Joel Robideaux.

The millages were originally passed a decade ago and require a vote of the people every ten years to renew the millage.
