LCG Launches "Smart Cart" Automated Trash Pick Up

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Lafayette, LA – March 3, 2009 – Beginning the week of March 30th, Lafayette Consolidated Government and Allied Waste will launch their new automated garbage pickup throughout Lafayette parish. This new system will help to simplify the process of collecting household garbage, which uses an Allied Waste issued 96-gallon “Smart Cart”.

“The new automated garbage system requires a special truck with a robotic/mechanical arm that is specifically designed to lift and empty the 96-gallon Smart Cart”, said Pat Logan, Associate Director with LCG Public Works.  “It is important that all acceptable garbage is placed within the 96-gallon Smart Cart only with nothing on the lid, as no other receptacle or individual bags will be emptied or attended to.”  Please note that the new Smart Carts can NOT be used until the week of March 30th.

Each Lafayette household resident will be provided a 96-gallon Smart Cart for their individual use. The cart comes with large wheels that make it easy to maneuver from storage to the curb. Additional Smart Carts are available to purchase, however, proper Recycling reduces the need for a second garbage cart.

“While this new system will take some getting used to, we are excited about the added benefits it will bring to our community. Most large cities throughout the country have already moved to a Smart Cart way of collecting garbage, and we feel confident it will enable us to keep up with our growth, while keeping our city clean”, said Logan.

In order to ensure service, Allied Waste is requesting the following guidelines be followed:

• Point arrows on the lid toward the street, with the wheels and handle toward your house.
• Place the 96-gallon cart out at the curb the night before your collection day as close to the curb as safely possible.
• Place the cart at least three feet away from mail boxes, utility poles, or anything else that could be damaged or could interfere with the mechanical arm grabbing the 96-gallon cart.  No chemicals or hot ashes/coals in the 96-gallon cart.

Garbage and yard waste service will be provided on the same day, once per week.  It is suggested that your old trash cans, not exceeding 35 gallons, be used for yard waste.  Information about new collection days is provided on a flyer, attached to each cart delivered. For more information on collection days and information on how to dispose of chemicals, construction debris, and “other metals,” visit lafayettela.gov to download a free copy of the Lafayette Parish P.R.I.D.E Guide, or call 291-8529.
