The Regulatory Compliance Section reviews subdivision, commercial, Public Works Operations and Capital Improvements projects for environmental compliance. Compliance assures the Department of Public Works follows state and federal environmental regulations in the areas of asbestos, lead, underground and aboveground storage tanks, solid waste and hazardous materials, environmental site assessments, landfill compliance issues, water discharge reporting, stormwater and wetland issues. The Section also handles citizen complaints and concerns (LCG EQ Hotline).
The Section is restoring Cajun Prairie grasslands as landfill cover to help both erosion control, leachate control and esthetics at the closed landfill located on Dugas Road.
Compliance performs stormwater presentations to area schoolchildren and civic groups, coordinates storm drain marking projects and is distributing informational pamphlets to citizens to educate them on storm water pollution prevention practices.
In compliance with state and federal regulations, the Regulatory Compliance Section completed a water quality stormwater management plan with other area-regulated entities (Lafayette Consolidated Government, City of Carencro, Town of Duson, City of Scott, City of Youngsville, University of Louisiana at Lafayette, and the Lafayette Regional Airport). The program is now in the last year of the five-year plan. Each year the program grows to include new strategies to improve Lafayette Parish’s water quality.
