The Lafayette Consolidated Government (LCG) considers one of its primary responsibilities as the Local Governing Body to keep the Public informed of all public activities related to the area, but most importantly to assure the Public that it will meet their needs in times of crisis.
Emergency Preparedness (EP) information is being provided at every level of government through various sources of information outlet – brochures and handouts, Newspaper, Radio, Television and the Internet. The Internet, over time, will become the most pervasive and useful tool for real time delivery of critical Emergency information as more and more of the Public gain broadband access to the Internet.
Lafayette is in a unique position to offer new and innovative Internet solutions as it is poised to roll out broadband access via its “Fiber To The Home” initiative along with plans to implement a Wireless network in the near future.
One of these innovative concepts is to develop an Emergency Preparedness Web Portal that will provide the Public as described:
- The Lafayette Consolidated Government (LCG) strives to provide a Public oriented Emergency Preparedness Web Portal that gives its users appropriate information in an Emergency Event as it progresses through its various stages.
- For Emergency events that are somewhat predictable, i.e. Hurricane, the content will change Stages from one of Emergency Preparedness to a Watch, Warning, Happening, Aftermath and Recovery. The content that is displayed during these Stages will be simple to use, understand and target information and functionality for that Stage.
- Other Emergency events that are unpredictable, i.e. train derailment, will have its own unique set of Stages, however the attempt to provide Stage appropriate information targeted to the needs of the user will continue to be the practice.
Currently the Web Portal is in a beginning introductory development that is geared to Emergency Preparedness regarding only Hurricanes. Over time the site will change to display the characteristics as indicated above and include all envisioned Emergency events that can be foretold.
