RAJUN CAJUN CLASSIC YOUTH VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT
Tournament brings 115 teams to Lafayette
Lafayette, LA –
This weekend, the Lafayette Parks and Recreation Department will host the Rajun Cajun Classic, attracting a large number of youth volleyball teams from throughout the country — 115 teams playing at six Lafayette recreation centers and injecting money into local businesses.
Mayor-President Josh Guillory said, “Attracting events like this tournament not only draws in tourism dollars, especially at a time when our businesses have been affected by the pandemic, but also shows our City and Parish appeal to people around the country.”
For the past 12 years, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette has hosted the Rajun Cajun Classic at the Earl K. Long Gym and Bourgeois Hall, but those facilities are not available this year because of COVID-19 restrictions. “The tournament will provide a much-needed boost to the hospitality sector this weekend. We estimate the players, coaches and their families will infuse more than $300,000 into the local economy during their time here,” said Ben Berthelot, President and CEO of Lafayette Convention and Visitors Commission.
Athletic Programs Supervisor Walter Guillory said, “In addition to the economic impact, the tournament is a win for the Lafayette Parks and Recreation Department.” Guillory added, “This can create more opportunities for us to host more youth sports events in the future. Large-scale tournaments benefit players who enjoy competitive sports, and it’s always a positive for our community when we attract more visitors.”
The Rajun Cajun Classic will be held Saturday, March 6 from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. at the following facilities: Comeaux, Domingue, Dupuis, Girard Park, Martin Luther King, and Robicheaux Recreation Centers.
