The Operations division is managed by the Deputy Chief and consists of three shift commanders supervising four fire districts comprising of 14 fire stations within the city of Lafayette. The mission of Operations is to provide prompt emergency response to all fires, accidents, medical emergencies, and related hazards to reduce the loss of life and property.
Within the Emergency Operations division there are two specialized team available 24/7 to respond to mitigate special hazards or incidents that may arise: Technical Rescue Team and Hazmat Team. Both groups of firefighters are highly trained in their respective area of concentration and available for regional response.
The Hazardous Materials Division is a specialized team of firefighters trained to mitigate a variety of hazardous chemicals, biological, and radiological emergencies in the city, parish, and regional. The team is charged with responding to all hazardous material incidents to identify the specific hazard and effectively resolve the pending hazards while ensuring the protection of life and the environment.
Technical Rescue Team
Our Technical Rescue Team responds to emergency incidents involving extremely high risk utilizing special skills, tools, and equipment. Typical response would include vehicle extrication, confined space rescue, rope rescue, trench rescue, structural collapse, swift water rescue and mass casualty. Their training, like hazmat, exceeds that of conventional firefighting.
Lafayette Fire Department is also the central agency for the Louisiana State Urban Search and Rescue Response Team 4.
