Lafayette, LA – Students from six Lafayette area high schools are putting water conservation at the forefront through their one-of-a-kind works of art, and today is the last day to vote for your favorite. Art students at Acadiana High, Comeaux High, David Thibodaux STEM Academy, Southside High, St. Thomas More Catholic High, and Teurlings Catholic High transformed rain barrels into eco-themed art to encourage water conservation in the community. “We not only had a great time doing it, but we also learned so much along the way. Embracing our Louisiana culture and supporting a good cause is something we will always strive to do,” said St. Thomas More student Crystal Peters.

Residents in and outside Lafayette Parish can purchase rain barrels, which not only help to conserve water but also preserve the environment, through May 11 or while supplies last. “We’re grateful for these young, talented artists and their teachers. This is a really creative way to raise awareness about water conservation and water quality. Captured rainwater can be used for watering plants and washing cars, which cuts down on the drinking water consumed. Lafayette Consolidated Government Environmental Quality Manager Bess Foret said. St. Thomas More student Annaclaire C Zerangue added, ““Working with my friends in art club on the rain barrel was an absolute blast! We had so much fun coming up with ideas along the way and seeing where each person could contribute their talents.” 

View the barrels here, vote for your favorite, and the top three of the “People’s Choice” will be chosen along with Mayor-President Josh Guillory’s choice. The deadline to vote is April 22. See the barrels in person in a window display at the Acadiana Center for the Arts. 

The contest is in its seventh year and made possible through Lafayette Consolidated Government, Lafayette Utilities System, the Bayou Vermilion Preservation Association, and Acadiana Center for the Arts. 

Residents in unincorporated areas of Lafayette Parish and the city of Lafayette qualify for one barrel per residence at the subsidized price of $45. Residents outside of LCG’s jurisdiction may purchase a barrel for $60. They’ll be available for pick up on Saturday, May 21 at the Dean Domingues Compost Facility located at 400 Dugas Road.
