In 2026, the United States will mark its 250th anniversary. Here in Lafayette Parish, we’re joining communities across the country to reflect on our shared history, recognize local contributions, and inspire the next generation of civic pride.
America250 marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence (1776-2026). The initiative is led nationally by the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commssion, and Louisiana has established its own America250 commission as well.
Communities are encouraged to:
- Explore history from multiple perspectives
- Highlight local stories and voices
- Promote civic engagement and education
- Look ahead to the future we want to build
Lafayette Parish’s history is shaped by culture, service, innovation, and resilience. America250 offers a moment to celebrate our local heritage and traditions, honor those who have served our community and country, share stories often overlooked, and engage young people in civic life.
America250 is not just about the past but rather a chance to reflect, connect, and imaging what comes next for Lafayette Parish!
America250 in Lafayette Parish is a community-driven effort. While planning is still underway and not all programs or events have bene finalized, residents, organizations, and partners are encouraged to think creatively about how they might participate or contribute.
Ways to get involved may include:
- Sharing local history, stories, or perspectives
- Hosting or supporting educational, cultural or civic programs
- Creating art, exhibits, performances or storytelling projects
- Honoring veterans, public servants, or community leaders
- Engaging youth through schools, clubs, or service projects
