LAFAYETTE PARISH URGES PUBLIC TO PREPARE NOW FOR SEVERE WEATHER AND POTENTIAL FLOODING
Lafayette, LA – Lafayette Parish is expected to experience a period of significant and potentially hazardous weather beginning Tuesday afternoon through Thursday morning. Forecasts call for 4 to 8 inches of rain, with some areas possibly seeing up to 12 inches. In addition to widespread rainfall, the public should prepare for strong, damaging winds, large hail, and a high risk of localized flash flooding. A Flash Flood Watch has been issued for the parish, in effect from Tuesday afternoon through Thursday morning.
The Lafayette Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (OHSEP) is closely monitoring the situation and remains committed to coordinating emergency planning, response, and recovery efforts across the parish.
Residents and business owners are urged to take the following precautionary steps to help protect lives and property and ensure public safety:
- Clear gutters, drains, and downspouts to ensure proper drainage.
- Move valuables, electronics, and important documents to higher ground.
- For flood-prone properties, consider placing sandbags to help prevent water intrusion.
Sandbags are available at the following self-service locations:
- Picard Park – 130 Park Lane
- North District Site – 400 Dugas Road
Please bring your own shovel and manpower. Note there is a limit of 20 sandbags per household. For additional assistance, call 311.
Lafayette OHSEP, in coordination with local agencies and emergency personnel, will continue to monitor weather developments and provide updates as needed. The public is encouraged to stay informed through official channels such as the LCG website, LCG socials, and local broadcast stations.
