ABANDONMENTS

ABANDONMENT PROCEDURES FOR THE CITY-PARISH OF LAFAYETTE, LOUISIANA

The following is the official procedure for requesting the abandonment of an alley, right-of-way, street, servitude or easement located in either the City of Lafayette or the unincorporated areas of the Parish of Lafayette.

All requests shall originate with the Planning, Zoning and Development Department. The staff will keep the applicants advised of all appropriate meeting dates and the Department may be contacted at 291-8445 between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday.

REQUIREMENTS

1. The applicant shall submit a brief letter, explaining the reason for the abandonment request.
2. Twenty (20) copies of a plat of survey, no larger than 11” x 17”, prepared specifically for an
abandonment request, are required.
3. A $500.00 filing and recording fee, payable to the Lafayette City-Parish Consolidated Government,
must be enclosed.

 

THE PLAT OF SURVEY MUST INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION

1. A legible survey with adequate graphics clearly showing the request for action and the area of
concern, including dimensions, bearings, benchmarks, township, range, etc.
2. A vicinity map with a scale no greater than 1” = 2,000’.
3. The name, mailing address and phone number of the applicant.
4. Certification of the plat by the land surveyor.
5. Date prepared.
6. The scale of the plat shall be no greater then 1” = 100’.
7. A north arrow.
8. The names and addresses of all adjoining property owners must be shown when a public
right-of-way is at issue.

 

These requests will be circulated to all affected City-Parish Departments for review. When approved, the request will be forwarded, as an Ordinance, to the City-Parish Council for final disposition. The entire process will take approximately six (6) weeks.

SPECIAL NOTE TO APPLICANT

The City-Parish Council will abandon only the government’s rights to public property. It is the duty of the applicant to seek approval from other involved utility companies such as SLEMCO, AT&T, Atmos Energy, Cox Communications, etc.
