Creating Healthier, Safer Homes for Lafayette Parish Families

Every family deserves a safe place to call home. Through the Lead Hazard Reduction Program, Lafayette Consolidated Government is helping residents better understand lead hazards, access educational resources, and build a foundation for healthier homes across our community.

Many homes in Lafayette Parish were built before 1978, when lead-based paint was commonly used. As these homes age, deteriorating paint or renovation work can create lead dust that may pose health risks—particularly for young children and pregnant women. By increasing awareness, expanding local partnerships, and preparing for future housing initiatives, LCG is working to reduce exposure risks and create safer living environments for current and future generations.

Creating Healthier Homes

The Lead Hazard Reduction Program is building the foundation for safer, healthier homes across Lafayette Parish. Through community education, local partnerships, and strategic planning, LCG is expanding the resources needed to reduce lead exposure and prepare for future housing assistance programs.

Funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the program focuses on:

  • Educating residents about lead hazards and prevention
  • Expanding community outreach and public awareness
  • Strengthening partnerships with local organizations and housing professionals
  • Building local capacity to support future lead hazard reduction efforts
  • Positioning Lafayette Parish to compete for future HUD Lead Hazard Reduction Grant funding

By investing in education and community partnerships today, LCG is laying the groundwork for future programs that will help eligible homeowners identify and reduce lead hazards, creating safer homes for families across Lafayette Parish.
