Wayfinding and Signage
Wayfinding That Reflects Lafayette
Improves navigation and creates a welcoming pedestrian experience while reflecting the French and Creole heritage that is an important part of our community.
Lafayette Consolidated Government's (LCG) Wayfinding Signage helps residents, visitors, and travelers navigate Lafayette Parish and find important community destinations. A coordinated network of signs directs people to community and institutional assets while making it easier to discover the places, services, and experiences that make Lafayette unique.
Wayfinding is more than helping people get from one place to another. Consistent, recognizable signage helps connect people with destinations throughout Lafayette Parish while supporting local tourism, highlighting community resources, and contributing to the character and identity of Lafayette.
Many of Lafayette's wayfinding signs include the French language and intentionally incorporate Louisiana French elements where appropriate, celebrating the cultural heritage of our community. This approach helps create a sense of place for residents and gives visitors a glimpse into the history and culture that make Lafayette and Acadiana distinctive.
The wayfinding program is one of the actions identified in PlanLafayette, Lafayette's comprehensive plan for the city and parish. The plan calls for signage that promotes historical resources, tourism, streetscape, and education while connecting people to places and experiences.
About Lafayette's Wayfinding Program
The Lafayette City & Parish Councils initiated the Wayfinding Signage program through a joint resolution adopted October 5, 2021. The resolution established a framework for creating more consistent signage across LCG and its facilities.
Wayfinding Signage installed as part of LCG's program is separate from private signs on commercial and other properties. Private signs are regulated through the Code of Ordinances. If you are installing or modifying a private sign, visit Sign Permits to learn about applicable requirements, regulations, and permits.
