Bertrand Drive Revitalization Advances with Underground Utility Work - Center Lane Closures

BERTRAND DRIVE REVITALIZATION ADVANCES WITH UNDERGROUND UTILITY WORK, CENTER LANE CLOSURES

Underground infrastructure work marks continued progress for safer travel, modern infrastructure, and new opportunities for residents and businesses along the corridor

Lafayette, LA – Lafayette Consolidated Government (LCG) announces intermittent center lane closures on Bertrand Drive between Johnston Street and North College Road beginning Monday, September 28, 2026 and continuing through Tuesday, March 30, 2027 for underground utility work of the first phase of the Bertrand Drive Revitalization Project. The closure is needed to allow construction crews to position equipment in the center of the roadway to perform subsurface boring for the installation of communication infrastructure.

While center lane restrictions are necessary within active work areas, through traffic in both directions will remain open to minimize impacts to businesses, residents and motorists along the corridor. The center lane will not be closed continuously along the entire corridor for the six-month construction period. Instead, closures will be staged in sections and move along Bertrand Drive as crews progress.

Access to businesses and properties will be maintained throughout construction. Left turns will be restricted only within active work areas where the center lane is closed. Motorists should allow additional travel time, use caution around construction crews and equipment, and use nearby intersections when their normal turning movement is temporarily unavailable. Alternate routes around construction include:

• N. College Road

More About the Project

Building the infrastructure to place communication and utility lines underground is the first phase of the Bertrand Drive Revitalization Project. This $1.9 million investment will improve reliability, reduce outages, and improve the corridor's appearance. This portion of the project is being constructed by DPG Construction and is expected to be completed by spring 2027, weather permitting.

Serving as a vital link between major destinations like Cajun Field and Moncus Park, Bertrand Drive also runs through Holden Heights, one of Lafayette's oldest neighborhoods. This investment lays important groundwork for revitalizing the historic corridor and setting the stage for future growth in the area.

The work underway builds on months of planning and public engagement with residents, business owners and other stakeholders. Beyond important utility and communications infrastructure, the project is designed to drive economic development and support existing businesses by improving access, visibility, drainage, and connectivity along the corridor. Future improvements are aimed at creating a more connected, accessible corridor that encourages walking, biking, and active use, while improving overall safety and mobility.
