Lafayette Waste Collection Schedule Changes Start August 3

RESIDENTIAL COLLECTION DAY CHANGES FOR APPROXIMATELY 7,000 HOUSEHOLDS BEGIN AUGUST 3

Growing participation in Lafayette’s recycling program prompts route updates to maintain reliable residential collection service

LAFAYETTE, LA – Lafayette Consolidated Government’s Environmental Quality Division, in partnership with Acadiana Waste Services (AWS), is notifying approximately 7,000 residents in the City of Lafayette and unincorporated areas of Lafayette Parish that their residential waste collection day will permanently change beginning the week of August 3, 2026.

Customers whose collection day is changing are receiving direct notifications by mail and, where email contact information is available, by email. Residents are encouraged to confirm their collection day by visiting lafayettela.gov/wasteupdate, where they will find route change information, a link to the interactive address lookup tool, and additional resources.

The updated collection schedule applies to all residential curbside collection services, including trash, recycling, yard waste, and bulky item collection.

Why Collection Routes Are Changing

This update reflects the continued success of Lafayette’s residential recycling program. Since 2023, participation in residential recycling has nearly doubled, resulting in significantly more material being collected across the parish. As recycling volumes have grown, existing collection routes have become increasingly unbalanced. Updating collection routes will help distribute service stops more evenly, improve operational efficiency, and ensure reliable service for residents while supporting the community’s continued growth.

Transition Week

To help residents adjust to their new collection day, Acadiana Waste Services will provide additional flexibility during the transition week beginning August 3.

During that week only, residents may place securely bagged household trash at the curb in addition to their collection cart. This temporary accommodation is intended to help prevent excess waste from accumulating as households transition to their new collection schedule.

To help ensure safe and efficient collection, residents are also asked to:

• Place carts and any collection items at least three feet apart so automated collection vehicles can safely service each cart.
• Avoid overfilling carts. Overloaded carts may result in litter and cannot be safely serviced.
• Ensure cart lids close completely. Carts with overflowing contents cannot be collected.

Lafayette Consolidated Government’s Environmental Quality Division will continue leading Lafayette’s residential waste and recycling program in partnership with Acadiana Waste Services as its contracted provider for the City of Lafayette and unincorporated areas of the Parish. Together, both organizations remain committed to providing dependable, efficient service while supporting Lafayette’s continued growth and increasing participation in recycling.
