LCG COMPLETES MAJOR RENOVATIONS AT SOUTH REGIONAL LIBRARY
Improving infrastructure and keeping our public spaces fresh and inviting for residents to enjoy.
Lafayette, LA – It’s been 18 years since Lafayette Consolidated Government (LCG) built the 37,600-square-foot South Regional Library at 6101 Johnston Street on what was then considered the outskirts of Lafayette. Fast forward to current day, this library is now situated in a high-traffic area at the intersection of Johnston Street and South City Parkway.
This branch of the Lafayette Public Library welcomes more than 35,000 patrons every month, plus an additional 4,000 patrons during the summer reading program. With that volume of visitors, the facility was due for some well-deserved renovations.
While library facilities fall within the purview of LCG, day-to-day operations are managed by the library under the guidance of the Library Board of Control and funded by a dedicated library millage.
Construction to enhance the space began in November 2025, led by LCG’s Capital Improvements Department. Now complete, the $2.5 million investment included major infrastructure investments, including a new roof to replace the original one, along with more efficient HVAC systems — comprised of all new air conditioning units, four air handlers, eight condenser units and three fresh-air units.
The first thing patrons notice upon arrival is the well-visited kids’ area, including the story-time room, renovated with new, colorful carpet and new bookcases. The story-time room also serves as a large gathering space for events, programs and houses the Cypress Theater for puppet shows. Additional storage space was added to house the wide assortment of supplies used for the library’s many public programs. The teen area was updated with new carpet and lighting as well. Eight study rooms of various sizes were remodeled with new carpet, fresh paint, tables and ergonomic seating. The rooms can be reserved in advance for meetings, studying or a quiet space to plan.
From the outdoor sconces on the façade to the indoor overhead lighting in the public and reading areas, new cool-tone lighting has made a noticeable difference throughout the facility. Existing lights were replaced with more efficient LED lights, improving brightness in the building.
The public restrooms also received a facelift, with new flooring, countertops, mirrors and hand dryers.
“The upgrades and renovations to our community spaces are one example of our ongoing commitment to reinvest in the parish’s infrastructure,” said Danny Gillane, Lafayette Public Library Director. “These are not only public buildings – they are safe, welcoming spaces where knowledge can be gained, technology can be utilized and new ideas can be explored. It is an opportunity for gathering, sharing wisdom and building community. We encourage residents to visit the South Regional Library and see the new renovations for themselves and attend a new program.”
In addition to book and videos, numerous programs from chess to Mah-jongg and from Legos to K-Pop Kommunity Meet-ups are available for patrons to enjoy.
