Strong partnerships are making this project possible. Working closely with the City Council, our state legislative delegation, and our congressional delegation, Lafayette has already secured more than $50 million in funding to advance the Johnston–Louisiana Corridor Project, including funding to move the downtown Segment 3 toward construction.

Development and zoning standards are an important tool for protecting the use, quality, character, and long-term value of our community. They help ensure that growth happens in a thoughtful way while protecting the people, businesses, properties, and neighborhoods that make Lafayette unique. As part of Phase One, LCG will review the existing codes and regulations along the corridor to make sure they support the vision for Johnston Street and Louisiana Avenue. Where updates are needed, we will consider changes that strengthen the corridor while protecting the interests of the people who live, work, own property, and invest here. We will work to ensure the code is an asset, not an obstacle, as we plan for the corridor’s future. Our goal is to protect what makes this corridor special while creating the flexibility and opportunity needed for it to thrive.

During Phase One, LCG and its partners will develop a corridor-wide planning and implementation framework while our engineering teams are surveying, mapping and gathering information about existing conditions.

Planned activities for 2026–2027 include:

• Public input and engagement opportunities
• Detailed analysis of existing conditions
• Corridor alternatives development
• Development of a path toward shovel-ready plans for implementation

With community feedback and technical analysis, the goal is to create actionable plans that can move forward beginning in 2028.

Improvements being considered include better lighting, native landscaping, gateway and placemaking features, streetscape enhancements, and expanded multimodal transportation options.

Phase One is about preparing for construction. The team will focus on studying existing road conditions, engaging with the community, completing design and utility work, and preparing the corridor for construction through 2027. Residents may see temporary traffic impacts as crews gather information. Any disruptions will be carefully scheduled and kept as brief as possible to minimize impacts on commuters, businesses, and local traffic. The team will work diligently to minimize right-of-way delays. Major construction is not expected to begin until late 2028.

The corridor is divided into seven segments that will be planned and constructed in phases over approximately 10 years. A segmented and multi-phased approach is essential to keep a project of this size and magnitude moving forward while strategically managing traffic, minimizing disruption to businesses, residents, and commuters, and providing the ability to address the most critical needs along Louisiana-Johnston first.

The Johnston Street and Louisiana Avenue corridor is more than a road. It is a transportation and economic lifeline for Lafayette. The 8.5-mile corridor stretches from Interstate 10 at Louisiana Avenue to Ambassador
Caffery, connecting businesses, schools, neighborhoods, places of worship, movie theaters, and culinary destinations. It is also home to our Ragin’ Cajuns at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, beautiful
Moncus Park, and the historic J. and L. Hebert Municipal Golf Course. As our city grows and welcomes new opportunities, now is the time to invest in and modernize this vital corridor at the heart of Acadiana — and the city we call home.

No. A new tax is not needed under our current funding approach. We will continue to build on our strong partnerships at the local, state, and federal levels and pursue available resources as the project advances. If we stay on track with those partnerships and Lafayette’s growth continues as expected, we believe the corridor can move forward without a new tax. A new tax is not on the table.
