Lafayette's Johnston-Louisiana Corridor Project Advances to Public Engagement
LAFAYETTE’S JOHNSTON-LOUISIANA CORRIDOR PROJECT ADVANCES TO PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT
Public surveys launch as LCG moves forward with planning and design of major corridor improvements
Lafayette, LA — Lafayette Consolidated Government (LCG) and its project partners are advancing the next phase of the Johnston Street and Louisiana Avenue Corridor Project, launching a comprehensive public engagement and technical planning process that will help shape future improvements along the 8.5-mile corridor.
As part of Phase One of the Johnston-Louisiana Corridor Project, LCG has launched online public surveys and will host a Community Open House at 5:30 p.m. Monday, October 26, 2026, at the Downtown Convention Center (124 S. Buchanan Street, Lafayette).
The project is focused on improving one of Lafayette’s most important transportation and commercial corridors while preparing the community for continued growth. Phase One will examine mobility, drainage, utilities, safety, business and investment, neighborhoods, placemaking, walking and biking, and future growth to identify improvements that address existing challenges and position the corridor for decades ahead.
“Johnston Street and Louisiana Avenue form one of Lafayette’s most important corridors, and we have an opportunity to make significant investments that address the problems people experience today while preparing for the growth ahead,” Lafayette Mayor-President Monique B. Boulet said. “That means looking at everything from traffic, drainage and utilities to safety, business access and how people move through these areas. Building this vision will take all of us, and I encourage our community to join us in shaping a corridor that serves our families and neighbors for generations to come.”
COMMUNITY INPUT BEGINS NOW
The launch of the public surveys marks the first of several opportunities for residents, businesses, property owners and people who travel the corridor to participate in the planning process.
Three online engagement tools are now available:
- Community Survey: Provides residents and corridor users an opportunity to identify priorities, challenges and opportunities for improvement.
- Local Business Owner Survey: Focuses on access, operations, investment and other issues affecting businesses and properties along the corridor.
- Interactive Mapping Survey: Allows participants to identify specific locations along the corridor where they experience challenges or see opportunities for improvement.

Feedback received through the surveys will help inform the October 26 Community Open House, where participants will have an opportunity to learn more about existing corridor conditions, interact with the project team and provide additional input on priorities and opportunities for improvement. Public engagement will continue throughout Phase One through additional activities including stakeholder meetings, business and property owner outreach, listening sessions, walking audits, community organizations and future project updates.
FROM COMMUNITY INPUT TO IMPLEMENTATION
Community engagement is one component of a broader technical effort already underway. During Phase One, engineering and planning teams will conduct field surveys, mapping, data collection and analysis of existing corridor conditions while evaluating potential improvements.
Community feedback will be considered alongside that technical analysis to develop and evaluate alternatives and establish a clear path for advancing priority improvements toward design and construction.
Work planned throughout 2026 and 2027 includes:
- Public engagement and stakeholder outreach
- Field surveys, mapping and data collection
- Analysis of existing transportation, drainage, utility and safety conditions
- Development and evaluation of potential corridor improvements
- Identification and prioritization of recommended improvements
- Development of an implementation strategy to advance projects toward construction
Phase One will continue into 2027, with construction currently anticipated to begin in 2028.
While survey responses will help inform upcoming engagement activities, including the October 26 Community Open House, the surveys will remain available through spring 2027 so the community can continue providing feedback as Phase One progresses.
