Agendas are normally published on the Friday prior to the meetings in The Acadiana Advocate, barring conflicts with holidays. Agendas are available at the Council Office or on the LCG website on Thursday afternoon prior to the meetings.

Citizens may complete speaker forms(s) for submission to the Clerk of the Council or the Council staff prior to the call of the agenda item(s) for which they wish to speak and are allotted three (3) minutes of speaking time per item.

The role of the elected City and Parish Councilmember is considered to be a temporary, part-time position. When calling for or visiting the Council Office to see Councilmembers, Council staff take messages, which are relayed directly to the Councilmembers if our Citizen Advocacy staff or our Legislative Assistants are unable to address the immediate issue(s) or concern(s).

The LCG administration exercises general executive and administrative authority; whereas, the Councils make up the legislative body, which adopts the laws of the City-Parish.

Meetings of the Lafayette City Council and the Lafayette Parish Council are held on the first and third Tuesdays of each month (unless otherwise noted). Parish Council meetings begin at 4:30 p.m. and City Council meetings begin at 5:30 p.m. The meetings are aired live on AOC 2 (LFT Fiber-Channel 4 and Cox Communications-Channel 16 or online at https://video.ibm.com/channel/lafayette-consolidated-government-council-meeting and https://www.aocinc.org/watch), then replayed on the following Friday at 7:00 p.m. on AOC2, then at noon the following Sunday on AOC 1 (LFT Fiber-Channel 3 and Cox Communications-Channel 15).

Minutes are published on the Friday following the meetings in The Acadiana Advocate and are placed on the Council webpage. Please note that the proceedings/minutes of the Council meetings are a synopsis, and is not a verbatim transcript.

The next election will be in 2027.  Candidates must qualify with the Lafayette Parish Clerk of Court, pursuant to the schedule of qualifying dates. For fees associated with qualifying, you may contact the Clerk of Court’s Elections Division at (337) 291-6368.  In lieu of fees, a candidate may present a nominating petition with at least 100 signatures, which could be explained further by Elections Division staff.
